A fascinating discovery of World War 2 history along with the beautiful North Coast of Egypt with stunning beaches and traditional souks at Mersa Matruh.
The military Commander Field Marshall Erwin Rommel was in charge of the desert campaign against the British commanded by Montgomery in 1942. So many soldiers were killed in this infamous battle with soldiers from across the world. In memory of these poor soldiers, El Alamein was built with over 7,420 graves and a popular attraction for visitors wanting to learn more about this historical war in Egypt.
In memory of Rommel’s extreme efforts, the Egyptian and German governments collaborated to open a Museum in 1977 at the Cave where Rommel implemented his plans for attacks on the British and other armies. Located in Mersa Matruh, it was an ideal location on the coast for his secret plans.
Several places in Mersa Matruh are named after Rommel including a Hotel, a bridge and an Island. The coastal resort of Marsa Matruh is a very popular resort for Egyptian on the holidays with pretty relaxing beaches, a traditional souk and many café and bars to rest and people watch.
